Patent applications submitted to KIPO surpass 200,000


 


According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), there were 204,589 patent applications in 2013. Patent applications stood at around 200 in 1949, before jumping to around 5,000 in 1980 and 100,000 in 2000. Over the past 13 years this has doubled to over 200,000.



There was some volatility caused by the financial crisis with applications dropping by 4.2% in 2009, but this was followed by 4.0% growth in 2010 and the upward trend has continued unabated since then. Growth in 2013 was recorded at 8.3% yearonyear.

There were 44,611 foreign applications, accounting for 21.8% of the total. Applications from Japan were highest at 16,297, posting a 1.8% growth rate yearonyear. This was followed by the United States (12,987, 14.5% yearonyear increase), Germany (4,419, 19.6%), France (1,949, 7.5%), Switzerland (1,330, 22.7%), and China (1,145, 16.6%).

There was also a remarkable increase in the number of applications by women with 16.9% yearonyear growth, reaching 5,458 in 2013. This is a significant increase compared to the average growth rate over the last 5 years (5.9%), attributed to the activities and efforts made by female inventors in transforming creative ideas into intellectual property rights.

The total number of IPR applications, including patents, utility models, designs, and trademarks, submitted to KIPO in 2013 amounted 430,164, an 8.4% growth rate yearonyear. Trademark applications totaled 147,667 in 2013, showing an 11.4% increase yearonyear and the highest growth rate among all IPRs.

Patent registrations reached 127,330, a 12.2% growth rate yearonyear in 2013. For IPR registrations as a whole, including patents, utility models, designs, and trademarks, there were 280,689 registrations in 2013, a 15.1% growth rate yearonyear. Trademark registrations showed the highest growth rate at 28.5%.

Samsung Electronics was the top applicant for patents and utility models for the second consecutive year with 7,698 applications, followed by LG Chem., LG Electronics, Hyundai Motor Company, and Samsung Display. LG Electronics topped the list for patent and utility model registrations with 2,882, followed by LG Display, Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor Company, and POSCO.
