Mobile shoppingrelated patent applications on the rise
Increased interest in mobile shopping has led to a rise in the number of patent applications related to mobile shopping, according to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO).
The number of patent applications related to mobile shopping has increased steadily, from 22 cases in 2009, 33 in 2010, 27 in 2011, 51 in 2012, and 57 in 2013.
Annual sales of mobile shopping, which more than doubled from 1.7 billion won in 2012 to 3.9 billion won last year, is expected to almost double to 7.6 billion won this year. Mobile shopping accounted for less than 1% of Internet shopping sales last year, but it is expected to increase to 10% this year.
Patent applications related to mobile shopping are focused on mobile transaction systems, including mobile advertisements; mobile display construction and information provision technology optimized for mobile devices; and payment and authentication technology for secure transactions.
There has also been a steady increase in the number of patent applications for implementation of hybrid shopping of mobile and offline shopping, such as technologies for connecting SNS and mobile shopping; linking mobile devices with offline shops or delivery destinations; and electronic tags and wallets for offline payments.
Interest in mobile shopping, competition for technology development and the preoccupancy of related patent rights is likely to increase.
