Package Examination of Patent and Utility Models

Patent or utility model applications related to one product or convergence technology can now be examined together at applicant’s desired time, according to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO). The customized package system, which went into effect as of December 16, may later be extended to trademark and design applications from April 2014.

In the case of Smartphone, the package examination system enables more than one patent or utility model application (such as antenna, modem, camera) to be examined with the launch day in mind. That allows the company to establish a strong IP portfolio in launching new products in a timely manner.

Applicants will be notified of examination results within two months, at the latest, under the system. Applications of patent or utility models for “overseas export” or “preparing or conducting business” may go through the package examination.  Also, ventures, “InoBiz” or “Sole Proprietor Creative Business” can request the package examination process.

For more effective communication and accurate examinations for applications related to technology, companies will provide presentations in advance with responsible examiners before the examination.

“This customized package examination system is all the more meaningful in that KIPO provides a bidirectional and customized administration service communicating with applicants,” said an official with KIPO. “Through this system, it will be easier for companies to establish a comprehensive IP strategy and portfolio.”
